Power to the Mountains
Solidarity not Charity.
Power the Mountains began as a GoFundMe organized by Allison Daniel, Bailey Knight, and Jet Schmidt to raise funds for a hub in Bakersville at Julie Wiggins’s House. Thankfully through networks of friends helping friends, help arrived in to Bakersville, NC area and our potter friends returned to their studios.
Power to The Mountains was connected to fiscal sponsorship by The Hack Foundation (d.b.a. Hack Club), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN: 81-2908499) for the leftover funds through Raleigh United Mutual Aid Hub (RUMAH), who were already distributing mutual aid to WNC. Through this partnership, we are able to continue our work supporting people in the WNC disaster area through mutual aid by purchasing specific supplies and fundraising.
Power to the Mountains is a group of trusted friends in North Carolina with shared values and useful skills working together to provide mutual aid to people in WNC. Our goal is to help groups on the ground in WNC with the exhausting work of sourcing and purchasing supplies and equipment for direct aid and recovery. We will continue our work as long as it is sustainable for our volunteers and/or needed by our partnerships. Any leftover funds will be donated to RUMAH and/or other mutual aid groups on the ground in WNC.

Thanksgiving, 2024
Jet, Amanda from The People’s Warehouse (RUMAH), and our friend and talented metal artist and welding instructor Mary Lewallen stayed in Asheville over the holiday and volunteered. Amanda worked very hard on harm reduction efforts and gave massages to relief worker and we all stayed up late listening to Rose Hardesty tell us amazing stories Sat night. We will post pics on social media and here sometime soon. We also met the nice people at the Pansy Collective and helped with cleaning up a church basement for their new distro hub in West Asheville.
November 2024
On November 8th, Jet and Fahad took their first trip to WNC. They delivered the last generator to the Mutual Aid Disaster Relief Hub (MADR) in West Asheville, along with a carload of supplies, and spent $1,045.33 on supplies for MADR, including first aid kits, lanterns, portable chargers, and denture tablets. The also took a trip to Bakersville to see Rose Hardesty and finally got to give her a big hug.
When they returned to Raleigh, they began working on a trip to deliver supplies to the ROAR hub in Marshall over Thanksgiving break. Jet purchased 40 empty propane tanks and took them to RUMAH. We are working with Triangle-based mutual aid groups and friends with trucks to get them out west ASAP. The tanks cost $1,844.27 at Costco, and the cost for filling the tanks is being covered by a generous donor in Durham. We also purchased 12 battery powered carbon monoxide detectors for $226.30.
Jet spent $252.30 on a cart, tape guns, tape, and furniture dollies for the RUMAH warehouse.
We are working on fundraiser by purchase gift cards for a two night stay at the Old Marshall Jail Hotel to use for a raffle that will benefit mutual aid groups in WNC. The raffle will begin as soon as we set up our employer matching gifts project through Benevity Causes, thanks to our fiscal sponsor, The Hack Foundation.
Our donation page is live through the link above, and all donations will continue to go towards delivering mutual aid to folks on the ground. After our visit in early November, we want to continue helping and delivering supplies as the people of WNC begin to move into the rebuilding phase.
October 2024
We raised $21,754 on GoFundMe to purchase generators and other supplies for the hub Julie Wiggins’ Pottery!
In October, $11,893.72 was used to purchase 14 generators, extension cords for the generators, dehumidifiers, chainsaw supplies, PPE, other supplies, and costs to rent a trailer and deliver to Bakersville and other to WNC relief hubs. Accounting information can be found by clicking here.
Thanks to Raleigh potter Liz Kelly and everyone else who jumped into action to help us locate generators and supplies in the Raleigh area and get them to the RUMAH warehouse where they were picked up by drivers heading west. Jet’s friend Kyle Carpenter was in Raleigh visiting family and took a load of supplies and dehumidifiers to Asheville as well.
